THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Cal Lutheran softball came up empty in two games against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, losing the first game 9-6 and the second game 10-0 (5 inn.), Saturday afternoon at Hutton Field.
The doubleheader was the home opener for the Regals, whose first six games of the season are versus conference opponents. CLU's overall and SCIAC record are the same at 0-4.
Junior Olivia Serrano was on the mound and made quick work of CMS early in the first game. During the first three innings, Serrano only allowed one hit and struck out two batters. The Athenas finally got to Serrano in the fourth inning, scoring four runs as they took the lead. CMS scored five runs the next inning off sophomores Sienna Perez (one earned run) and Meghan Henry (three earned runs).
Cal Lutheran got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth as junior Danielle Chatman doubled to right center, scoring junior Kendall Marinesi and freshman Mia Onesto. A few batters later, junior Celeste Ekman doubled and Chatman raced home.
The Regals got three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they made the score 9-6. Chatman recorded her third hit of the game, another double, as Marinesi and Onesto scored again. Ekman then added her second RBI of the game as she hit a sacrifice fly to left center.
CMS was able to put the Regals away after that and took the game 9-6. Serrano suffered the loss as the offense left 10 runners on base. Chatman is up to an impressive 7 RBIs on the young season.
The Athenas used the momentum from the first game as they shut out the Regals in the second game. Brittany Workman only made it 3.0 innings as she gave up eight hits and seven runs, five of which were earned. CMS scored four runs in the second inning and three in the third.
CMS added three more runs in the top of the fifth and had a 10-0 lead. The Athenas' pitcher lasted the whole game, only giving up four hits over the five innings, as the game was called due to a mercy rule.
The Regals hit the road before coming back home for a 16-game home stand. Cal Lutheran continues with conference play and will be at Chapman on Saturday, March 2, for a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m.
