Slattery Named CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American

GREENWOOD, Ind. — Just the third award honoree in program history, Cal Lutheran Baseball's junior Christian Slattery was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team, presented by CoSIDA. The first team award recognizes the top two pitchers in the nation for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

On the mound, Slattery finished the regular season first in the SCIAC and fifth in the nation with nine saves – two coming against No. 6 Chapman and No. 16 Texas Lutheran. The all-conference second team honoree opened the year with 8.2 scoreless innings and closed the season with a team-low 1.59 ERA, allowing just four earned runs in 22.2 innings of work while striking out 19.

His nine saves are fifth on the program's all-time record list for saves in a single season, and his career 15 saves, in just two years, is second in the record books for saves in a career. He now sits just 10 behind all-time leader Aaron Roth with 25. Slattery is also just the third CoSIDA Academic All-American, following outfielder Bob Farber in 1991 and 1992 and Nicholas Boggan in 2013.

In the classroom, the 2019 summa cum laude graduate notched a 4.00 GPA as an economics major and earned the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key awarded to the graduate with the highest GPA in the school of management. He additionally was presented the 2017-18 Academic Excellence Award and department honors in economics for his thesis on constructing aging curves for major league baseball players.
