CLU Earns Second Straight Season Sweep
McLogan finishes with a match-high 14 kills
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Led by freshman outside hitter Kylie McLogan and her match-high 14 kills, No. 14 Cal Lutheran defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 Friday evening.
Box Score: CLU 3, CMS 0 - F
Holding CMS to a .000 attack percentage in the first set, and a paltry .026 pct. in the second, the Regals were able to further frustrate the Athenas by committing only six attack errors of their own throughout the first two sets.
In comparison, CLU forced the Athenas to commit 16 attack errors throughout that same timespan, seven of which took place during Friday’s opening set.
It was not until the latter moments of the third set when Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was finally able to generate some positive results on offense, creating a three-point lead with only an additional three points needed to win its first set of the night
Emerging from their timeout trailing 19-22, Regals middle blocker Shannon Pearson initiated her team’s comeback, recording her first kill of the set to trim the deficit to only two points.
After two CMS errors and another Pearson kill, the Regals were able to regain the lead once again after CLU’s front-line forced Athenas’ right side Bennett Jones to hit her shot out-of-bounds.
Even though Bennett’s shot successfully eluded the reach of the Regals’ blockers, her attempt traveled well past the end line, giving Cal Lutheran its first match point opportunity.
Within a matter of moments, a three-point Athenas’ lead morphed into a two-point CLU set victory after the Athenas officially ended the evening after committing their 24th attack error of the match.
Erasing their deficit by winning six of the final seven points of the match, CLU was able to not only earn a three-set sweep over CMS Friday night, but also secure its second straight regular-season sweep over the Athenas.
Leading the way for the Regals in addition to McLogan, senior right side Casy McWhirk finished with 14 digs, her highest three-set total of the season.
Cal Lutheran has now won eight of the last 10 head-to-head meetings and the last five straight matches played against the Athenas.
A week-long break in Cal Lutheran’s (14-4, 7-0 SCIAC) conference schedule will allow the Regals to host their second volleyball tournament of the season, the 2011 Posada Royale Fall Classic.
Taking place at Gilbert Arena on Oct. 14-15, CLU will begin the two-day event next Friday with a 3:00 p.m. match against Mary Washington, ending its first day of action with a 7:00 p.m. contest that evening against Rhodes. Matches scheduled to take place throughout the final day of the tournament for the Regals includes a 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. match against Lycoming and Widener.
Cal Lutheran will conclude its six-match homestand and resume SCIAC competition on Oct. 18 against La Verne.
