Regals Advance to SCIAC Tournament Finals with Sweep over Sagehens

CLU, CMS set for rematch in SCIAC Finals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The nationally-ranked No. 2 Cal Lutheran women’s volleyball team, and No. 1 seed in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament, defeated Pomona-Pitzer for the third time this season with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20) sweep of the Sagehens in the semifinals on Thursday night.

With the win, the Regals will welcome nationally-ranked No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, to Gilbert Arena this Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s final.

The Regals started off the first set with three points and quickly moved up from there. They went on a nine-to-three scoring drive to put the score at 12-5 and took a commanding lead. The Regals grabbed five more points and only allowed the Sagehens two points to go up 17-7. The Violet and Gold then scored seven consecutive points with Hope Stewart on service, increasing their lead by 15 points. CLU kept pushing forward and took the three points needed to put the set away, 25-9.

The second set started again in dominant fashion for the Regals. They tallied eight straight points before the Sagehens got on the board, all with Jamie Smith on service. The Sagehens came back and had a 12-to-seven drive to close the gap, but CLU still held the lead at 15-11. Pomona-Pitzer was able to snatch seven points to the Regals four, making the score 19-18, but CLU was able to hold the Sagehens to just one point after that and closed out the set 25-19.

The third set started off with the Sagehens taking an early 5-2 lead, but that did not stop the Regals. With Dani Gonzalez on service, CLU grabbed seven points in a row to take the lead and put the score at 9-5. The Sagehens got one point, but the Violet and Gold came back and added five points to the score taking a comfortable lead, 14-6. The Sagehens were able to close the gap at the end coming within one point making it 21-20, before the Regals closed out the set and match, 25-20.

Michelle Lawrence led the Regals in kills with 12 and also racked up seven digs. Stewart followed suit with 10 kills and eight digs, while Amanda Roberts had nine kills and eight digs. Sarah Pappas had seven kills and four blocks. Monica Lundgren had three kills, one solo block and three block assists. Nicki Tetherow had five assists and 17 digs, while Smith had 37 assists and nine digs. The Regals split five services aces between five different players.

Cal Lutheran (24-4) will host the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship game this Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 p.m. against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps inside Gilbert Arena. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament. 

Video and Live Stats will be available for the match and tickets will be sold at the entrance. Children under the age of 12 as well as students, faculty and staff with ID will receive free admittance. Tickets for seniors (55 and older) and veterans will be $5 while admission for all others is $10.
