THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 2 Cal Lutheran Regals will face off against the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas on Friday, April 27, at 4 p.m. in the semifinals of the SCIAC Women's Water Polo Post-Season Tournament.
The match happens just six days after the Athenas edged out the Regals by one goal in the last game of the season to avenge Cal Lutheran's win earlier in the year.
A month later, the Athenas traveled to Cal Lutheran to take senior day 11-10 from the Regals. Kristi McGee scored four goals in the contest, including a hat trick in the first period, and goalkeeper Bailey Meyer picked up eight saves on the afternoon. However, CMS's Roxy Kiessling's seven goals ultimately led the Athenas to a win.
Meyer also enters the contest jut five goals away from tying current record holder Gina Merry for most saves in a single season (289). Meyer currently sits at 284 in 2018, after already breaking into the second place spot with 281 saves in 2017.
For the defense, Mackenzie Thomas tallied seven field blocks, followed closely behind with six each from Erin Cunefare, Seeman and Hirn. McGee and Roed also led the team in steals with 40 and 38, respectively.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the all-time series 14-13, outscoring Cal Lutheran just 226-212. Cal Lutheran swept last season, however, taking game one 8-6 on March 25 and game two 9-8 on April 21.
The winner of Friday's match will move on to face either No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer or No. 4 Whittier at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, at the site of the higher seed.
