CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 California Lutheran women's water polo team remained undefeated in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play as the Regals took down the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas 8-4 Saturday afternoon at Axerlrood Aquatics Center.
Cal Lutheran improved to 7-0 in the SCIAC and 15-5 overall. CMS dropped to 12-6 and 5-2. The Regals have now won three straight games versus the Athenas. CLU tied up the all-time series at 13-13.
The Regals had a .500 shooting percentage in the win. They took 16 shots in all. Bailey Meyer was in the Cage for CLU and made 14 saves while only allowing the four goals.
Victoria Rose Meek led the offense with four goals. Nicole Guerriero, Kristi McGee, Mardell Ramirez, and Megan Seeman rounded out the scoring as each put in one goal. Seeman tallied two assists and Guerriero, Ramirez and Seeman each had one. Meek had three drawn ejections and McGee had two more.
Meek got the scoring going as she scored 15 seconds into the game. She added another goal a minute later. CMS scored once in the quarter and CLU led 2-1 after one. The defenses stepped up in the second quarter and the game was still 2-1 at the half.
The Regals opened up the game in the third quarter as they outscored the Athenas 4-1. Seeman, Meek, Guerriero and McGee made it 6-2 after three. Both teams scored twice in the fourth quarter as CLU won 8-4.
Up next for Cal Lutheran is Pomona-Pitzer. The Regals host the Sagehens Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
