THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran women's water polo team had an off day as the No. 7 team, Macalester Scots, knocked off the No. 2 Regals 6-4 on Friday at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
The Regals struck twice in the first quarter. Mardell Ramirez put CLU on the board first as she scored two minutes into the game. Mackenzie Thomas made it 2-0 one minute later. Cal Lutheran shut out Macalester in the first quarter and had the 2-0 lead.
The Scots scored first in the second quarter, but the Regals were quick to answer. Claire Justman scored her first career goal and gave CLU a 3-1 lead with 1:38 left in the half. At the break, Cal Lutheran still had the 3-1 advantage.
Macalester cut the lead to one as they scored halfway through the third. With 1:52 left in the quarter, the Scots tied it up at 3-3. Macalester took its first lead of the game as they scored with six seconds left in the third. It was a defensive game throughout the first three quarters as the Scots had a 4-3 lead heading to the fourth.
The deficit got pushed to 5-3 as Macalester scored with just under six minutes left in the game. The Scots continued to increase their lead as they scored with 4:49 left. CLU showed some life as Nikki Roed made it 6-4 with 1:47 left. The Scots were able to hold off the Regals and won the game 6-4
The Regals are back in the pool Saturday. They have a double header as they host Whittier at 11 a.m. and then Connecticut College at 2 p.m.
