OJAI, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran Regals traveled to the 119th Ojai Annual Tournament, which was held Thursday through Sunday, this past weekend. The Regals sent eight to participate in the Division III Invitational Singles. Along with four pairs to play in the Division III Invitational Doubles.
Competing in the Division III Invitational Singles was Joslin Seaberg, JoAnn Taylor, Brennan Foreman, Heidi Levanen, Nicole Alvarez, Carolina Groff Hinojosa, Christie Kurdys, who was ranked No. seven going into the brackets, and Lilijana Peters-Semak, who was ranked No. two entering the tournament.
Kurdys, defeated UC Santa Cruz's Isabelle Brown, 6-3 and 7-5, in the first round. She then faced Caltech's Ankita Roychoudhury, and won 6-2 and 6-2, to move on to the quarterfinals. Kurdys then fell to Trinity's Caroline Kutach 6-0 and 6-0 in the round of eight.
Alvarez, won against UC Santa Cruz's Kayla Manz, by winning the first set 6-1, falling the second 6-4, and winning the third 6-2. She then faced UCSC's Ashley Isaac, falling the first set 6-0, winning the second 6-4 and winning the third 6-0, moving her on to the quarterfinals. Alvarez then fell to Caltech's Kana Moriyama, winning the first set 6-4, falling the second 6-0, and falling in the third 6-2.
Seaberg started the tournament against Occidental's Jane Wright, winning 6-3 and 7-6(5). Then facing off against Trinity, falling 6-0 and 6-0.
Foreman, won round one against Whittier's Amanda Rodriguez, 6-0 and 6-1. Then, she faced Trinity's Zoe Kaffen, falling 6-1 and 6-1.
Semak started the tournament against Occidental's Andrea Clawson, winning 6-2 and 7-5. Moving on to face Trinity's Mary Kaffen, she fell falling 7-6(5) and 6-1.
Taylor fell to Caltech's Anna Tifrea, 6-1 and 6-0, in the round of 32, moving her into the consolation bracket. She then fell to Willamette's Sarah Dean, falling the first set 6-2, winning the second 7-6(5), and falling in the tiebreaker 10-8.
Levanen played against UC Santa Cruz's Ashley Isaac, and fell 6-1 and 6-4, moving her into the consolation bracket, but fell to UC Santa Cruz's Kayla Manz 6-0 and 6-1.
Groff started the tournament against Caltech's Kana Moriyama and fell 6-0 and 6-1.
The Regals finished their 2018-19 season with a record of 14-6 overall, and 3-4 in conference, landing them in fifth place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
