THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals took the Whittier Poets to a full 110 minutes in their midweek shooting royale, but came up with just one point in the 0-0 draw. Twelve different Regals found looks at goal, but struggled to find the back of the net in the 22-shot night. Overall, freshman Janelle Effarah led the offense with four shots, while juniors Emily Williams and Maddy Griess each contributed three shots apiece.
The Regals brought the attacking pressure early in the 16th minute with a corner from the left flag by sophomore Alexander Fagerberg who serviced the ball into the box for Williams, but the header was narrowly blocked before being punched out behind the goal line. Fagerberg again took the subsequent corner, this time from the right flag, and again found the head of Williams, but the shot missed just left the posts.
Not long after, the Regals threatened in the 28th minute with a ball played into the middle for senior Sarah Tadeusiak who nailed a shot to the top of the goal that was barely saved by the fingertips of the keeper and rattled off the crossbar. The ball bounced back into the box and found the feet of senior Jordan Miller who took one touch before firing a shot that tailed offline to the left.
The second half fared much the same as the Regals took nine more shots in the back half of the contest, including a late goal called off in the 70th minute. Freshman Danielle Vis opened the play with a corner from the left flag that was collected by freshman Sonia Chan before being played back out to the left side for Vis. The defender then sent the perfect cross into the right side of the box for Griess who fanned a header over the keeper's head and into the back left of the net.
Unfortunately, a late whistle blew as a pushing foul in the box negated the Regals' celebration and sent both teams into golden-goal overtime.
Just as they had in the first 90 minutes, Cal Lutheran controlled the offensive momentum of the overtime periods, taking four shots while holding their opponents to none. However, the shots by junior Zandra Stewart, Fagerberg, Griess and sophomore Mackenzie Boulware could not score the gamewinner for the Regals.
The tie moves Cal Lutheran to 4-1-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play. They return to the pitch on Saturday, September 29, against the Redlands Bulldogs at 11 a.m. PST at the Farquhar Fields.
