Regals Take on Chapman in SCIAC Tournament Semifinals

LOS ANGELES — The California Lutheran Women's Basketball team finished the regular season with a 15-10 record and was 10-6 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) as the Regals claimed the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

The field for the 2018 SCIAC Women's Basketball Tournament is set and the semifinals are Thursday, February 22 at 7 p.m. at the higher seeds, while the finals slated for Saturday, February 24 at the highest remaining seed.

Cal Lutheran will take on the No. 2 seed, Chapman (21-4) Thursday at 7 p.m. in Orange, Calif., inside the Harold Hutton Sports Center. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (22-3) claimed the No. 1 seed and will take on the No. 4 seed, Redlands (14-11).

The Matchup

The Panthers were victorious in the first two meetings with the Regals. Chapman won the Jan. 8 contest in Thousand Oaks, Calif., with a final score of 68-56. The Panthers swept the season series as they won Feb. 3, 65-61, in Orange, Calif.

Chapman brings an exhausting full-court press, but also averages 17 turnovers a game. Three Panthers average 10-plus points. Lucy Criswell puts up 14.5 points per game (PPG), Jaime Hum-Nishikado scores 13.3 ppg and Jaryn Fajardo chips in with 10.7 ppg. Criswell leads the team with 5.7 rebounds per game (RPG) and Jaryn Fjardo dishes out a team-high 4.4 assists per game (APG).

The Regals enter the postseason on a three-game win streak. CLU has a balanced offense and is led by senior Kiana Gray at 11.1 ppg. Freshman Kailee Yan is next with 8.7, junior Kayla Watterson puts up 8.5, freshman Jessi Westering adds 7.1, Grace Derksen scores 6.2 and Natalie Ruhl adds 6.0. Watterson leads the team with 10.2 RPG and Gray is next with 6.9. Derksen and Rylie Wada keep the offense moving with 2.6 and 2.2 assists per game, respectively.
