Road Recap: Kingsmen Open Gary Troyer Tournament 2-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo opened the Gary Troyer Tournament hosted by Pomona-Pitzer with a 21-9 victory over Penn State-Behrend before downing Division I Iona (N.Y.) by a 17-5 margin in the nightcap.

In the morning, all eligible field players got in on the action as the Kingsmen exploded for a season-high 21 goals. Chris Gardhouse led the way with five and Andre Laserna added a hat-trick of his own with three. Jack Kirby, Wyatt Lowe and Thomas Randles added a pair apiece and seven others netted one as well. Gardhouse, Lowe and Parker Jory each handed out two assists and George Lundgren and Kevin Oetkin both drew a pair of ejections.

Defensively, Kirby, Oetkin and Justin English notched field blocks and French and Stephen Blaauw paced the group with four steals apiece. Lundgren Jake Venckus and Andre Rivas ashared the goalkeeping duties with two and five saves, respectively.

Game two pitted the Kingsmen against the Gaels in a rematch of an opening weekend contest. CLU avenged a 9-7 loss with a dominating 17-5 victory today in which Gardhouse supplied four goals, four steals and two assists while Lowe chipped in with four goals, two drawn ejections and a steal. Cole capped off the day with a hat-trick and six additional players found the back of the net. Mats Albins dished out a team-leading four assists and English finished with three.

At the defensive end, Nick Loomis guarded the goal and tallied 19 saves with an assist as well. Laserna and Ramon Olivier V added field blocks and Albins and Cole both came up with two steals to follow Gardhouse.

 Cal Lutheran (6-7) is back in action tomorrow when the Kingsmen face La Salle (Pa.) and Concordia-Irvine at 10:30a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, to close out the tow-day tournament.
