THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.– The California Lutheran University men's tennis team competed in their first fall tournament of their 2019-20 season when they traveled to Claremont, Calif. to take part in the ITA Fall West Region Individual Championships.
Beginning in the men's open doubles bracket, CLU started off hot as the duo of Jake Haffner and Isaiah Volk came out victorious in their opening match, winning 8-1. Also advancing past the opening round were Noah Morrow and Aaron Moylan, defeating their opponents 8-6.
Both teams would eventually fall in the round of 16, Haffner and Volk lost 8-7(2) while Morrow and Moylan fell 8-5.
Volk continued the competition in the flight A singles tournament, but was defeated in the first round 6-7 (4); 6-1 and then retired due to injury.
Haffner made a solid run in the flight B singles competition, winning his first match 6-2; 6-3 and then came out victorious in his round of 16 match 6-2; 7-5. The senior's run would end their as he fell in his quarterfinal matchup 6-2; 7-5.
Morrow also took part in the flight B singles competition, but could not get out of the first round. However, the sophomore rebounded for a 6-2; 7-5 win in his consolation matchup.
Sebastian Ariza grabbed the first win of his 2019-20 campaign when he picked up a 6-2; 6-1 victory before being knocked out in the round of 16.
While Spina fell in the first round of his tournament, the freshman made an incredible run winning four consecutive matches, including a 6-3; 6-3 match victory to take home the consolation title.
Cal Lutheran will resume competition in the spring when they open their 2020 schedule in Texas to take on Trinity (Tex.) at 9 a.m. on Feb. 22.
