PASADENA, Calif. – With playoff contention on the line, the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen picked up three more points with a 2-0 win over the Caltech Beavers, Wednesday afternoon. Freshmen Adrian Graciano picked up his second goal in purple and gold, while freshman Igor Lumbrano sealed the deal with a penalty kick in the second half.
"I thought today we played together as a team for 90 minutes. They battled all game and the result shows it. We now have to get ready for our next opponent, La Verne, which will be a tough game," said head coach Miguel Ruiz.
Cal Lutheran put a total of 12 shot on the board, five on goal, while starting sophomore keeper Antonio Welch added five saves to his tally. Senior Jared Pischke led the offense with three shots while junior Aaron Winsick notched two knocks on goal.
Freshman Justin Magana got the attacking force going with a shot in just the fifth minute of action, but flew high of the bar. Junior Joey Arnold followed up with a sailing shot of his own just four minutes later, but the Kingsmen couldn't dent the back of the net until the 39th minute of play.
Finally making a breakthrough, freshman McKay Severance received a ball wide and took a defender on before playing a ball to Pischke inside the box. Pischke then crossed the ball to Graciano inside the six-yard mark, who tapped one in to the left side of the net to finish the play.
Up 1-0 entering the second half, the Kingsmen were able to pad their lead in the 53rd minute. A rough tackle on Pischke inside the box set up a penalty kick for Lumbrano who sent one easily past keeper to make a 2-0 score.
Also making his first appearance between the posts, freshman Owen Ebner saw time at the end of the contest, recording his first two saves as a Kingsmen and blanking the Beavers the remainder of the contest to send Cal Lutheran home with the win.
The victory moves Cal Lutheran to 5-8-0 overall and 5-5-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, sitting in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference standings at 15 points.
The Kingsmen now look to Saturday, October 13, against the La Verne Leopards at 2:30 p.m. PST inside William Rolland Stadium to take sole possession of fourth.
