THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Kyle Ferreira scored his 1,000th career point as the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen basketball team took on the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Banana Slugs took down the Kingsmen 81-67.
Ferreira reached the 1,000-point club in just three years with Cal Lutheran. He is the second Kingsmen to join the club this year. Austin Cole scored his 1,000th point on Dec. 6. Ferreira is the 27th member of the 1,000-point club.
The duo both reached the 20-point mark in the game. Cole was the high-man with 23 points and Ferreira added 20. Cole had a team-high six rebounds, while Ferreira tallied four rebounds and three assists.
Cal Lutheran shot 85-percent from the free throw line as they made 17 free throws. However, the Kingsmen were out-rebounded 41-28 and allowed 42 points in the paint.
The Banana Slugs started the game with a big run which set the tone for the game. They led 17-5 just six minutes into the game. Cal Lutheran would chip away at the score and cut the lead down to one point. It was 23-22 with 9:29 left in the half. UCSC would open back up the lead and were up 39-31 at the half.
In the second half, Cal Lutheran cut the lead to four, 48-44, after a Tyler Brabant layup. The Banana Slugs answered that with an 8-0 run and were up 56-44 with 12:59 left in the game. CLU wasn't able to get back in the game as the Banana Slugs walked out of Gilbert Arena with an 81-67 win.
The Kingsmen get back into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play this next week. Cal Lutheran hits the road and takes on Caltech Wednesday at 7 p.m.
