CLAREMONT, Calif. - In a pivotal Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup on Thursday night, the Cal Lutheran men's basketball team upset the first place and No. 25 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road behind a three-pointer at the buzzer from point guard Caleb Richey for a 61-58 victory.
After a cold shooting first half that saw both teams go a combined 2-for-17 from downtown, the Kingsmen got hot in the second, converting 7-for-11 from three while shooting 56.5 (13-for-23) percent from the field. CLU trailed by as many as eight in the second half and whittled away at the lead until they found themselves ahead down the stretch. Kyle Ferreira came through with two critical three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the Kingsmen ahead 58-53 with 1:13 remaining.
The Stags responded with a three-pointer of their own and tied the game at 58-58 with just six seconds on the clock. With the seconds ticking away, Richey raced down the length of the court and sent the Kingsmen bench into a frenzy with the game-winning basket as time expired.
Offensive Highlights: Ferreira led all players in the game with 16 points while Wolfgang Wood finished with 14 and Richey added 13. Ferreira finished 4-for-7 from three-point territory and was an efficient 6-for-9 from the field. Richey once again led all players with six assists while Blake Miles and Wood added two apiece.
Defensive Highlights: Wood pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Richey was close behind with six. Miles also had a big game defensively coming away with a career-high of four steals.
The Opponent: The Stags were led by 15 points from Kendrick Morris and got 10 points apiece from Michael Scarlett, Riley Hall and Evan Davis. Scarlett also led the team with seven rebounds and four assists.
Notables: With six more assists tonight, Richey sits at 162 for the season which leaves him just two shy of the single-season CLU record of 164 set by Johnny Allen in the 1997-98 season.
Cal Lutheran (17-6, 10-4 SCIAC) has clinched a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and currently sits in a three-way tie for second place with La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer. The Kingsmen take on the Leopards this Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4:00 p.m. in a critical contest to determine playoff seeding.
