THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran baseball team accounted for 17 runs on 17 hits as the Kingsmen took down the Bates Bobcats 17-2 Wednesday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.
Freshman Zach Bullard was playing in his second collegiate game for the Kingsmen (6-5). In his second at bat of the game, he walked up the plate with the bases loaded. Bullard crushed his first career home run as he hit a grand slam and sent the ball over the right field fence.
The Kingsmen used five different pitchers in the game. The most efficient pitchers were Derek Galvin who pitched the first inning and sat the Bobcats down in order. He struck out one batter. Up next was Kevin Baranowski. He pitched three innings and struck out two batters and did not give up a hit. Mason Snodgrass pitched two innings and got his first win of the season as he struck out two Bobcats.
Cal Lutheran jumped all over Bates from the get-go and scored three runs in the first inning. Bates scored its only two runs in the top of the third and cut the deficit to two at 4-2.
The Kingsmen scored at least a run in every inning from there on out. Iniguez doubled in the fourth to bring home two runs. Egan singled in the fifth bringing home two more.
The big inning came in the bottom of the eight. After the Kingsmen had already scored two, Bullard walked up to the plate with the bases loaded. He cleared the bases with the grand slam. The Kingsmen went on to win the game 17-2.
Cal Lutheran is at home for the next game and gets back in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. The Kingsmen host Occidental Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Ullman Stadium.
