THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On a sunny day, the California Lutheran baseball team took Linfield University the distance, and some, as the Kingsmen tied up the game in the bottom of the ninth before falling to the Wildcats 8-7 Saturday at Ullman Stadium.
It was the first game of the season for both teams. In the West Region, Cal Lutheran is ranked No. 2 and Linfield is No. 4. It was a good test for both teams and turned out to be a battle.
The Kingsmen took the lead in the next inning as Troy Frazier homered in his first career at-bat. The Wildcats bounced right back and tied the score at 2 in the top of the third. They kept scoring and put up four runs total in the third and had a 5-2 lead. In the seventh, the Wildcats scored another.
The Violet and Gold wouldn't back down. In the bottom of the eighth, Daniel Parr, Max Weinstein and Jeff Wilson each hit in a run and the lead was down to one, 6-5. It was Parr's first collegiate RBI.
In the ninth, Linfield got one run back and led 7-5. Matt Sciumbato and Parr had a RBI as the Kingsmen tied the game.
It went to extra innings, but didn't last long as Linfield scored in the top of the tenth. CLU couldn't answer and fell 8-7.
CLU is right back at it Saturday as the Kingsmen and Wildcats play a double-header in Ullman Stadium at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
