Kingsmen Open World Series with Lyons

Appleton, Wis. - The Cal Lutheran baseball team has arrived in Appleton, Wis. for the 2017 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships and is geared up for its opening matchup against Wheaton (Mass.) (27-15) tonight, May 26 at 5:45 p.m. PT held at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Kingsmen (35-10), currently ranked No. 15 in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and polls, swept through the West Region to advance to the College World Series for the sixth time in program history, and first since 1999.

Wheaton, meanwhile, is making its third appearance in Appleton, after first reaching the College World Series in 2006 and most recently in 2012. The Lyons won the Mid-Atlantic Regional after going 4-1 and defeating Shenandoah (Va.) 1-0 in the final.

The Kingsmen are led by second basemen Max Weinstein who is batting .382 (73-for-191) with 35 runs scored, 31 RBIs and four homeruns. The junior leadoff hitter has been on a tear at the dish and went 11-for-17 in the regional for a .647 average. With one more hit, Weinstein ties the single-season record for most hits in a season of 74 set by Eric Hedgeman in 1981.

Gabe Gunter leads the team with five homeruns while batting .350 (63-for-180) and catcher Trey Saito has been hot as of late and boasts a .382 average (39-for-102) for the year.

Probable game one starter Marshall Pautsch is 9-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 101.2 innings this season and went 2-0 with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings in the regional. Closer Miguel Salud is climbing the record books and needs just one more appearance to break the single season CLU record currently held by Aaron Roth at 29. Salud's 11 saves this season rank third all-time in program history.

The Lyons are led by the senior duo of Zach Goodwin-Boyd and Josh LaJoie who are hitting .343 and .341, respectively. As a team, Wheaton is hitting at a .285 clip and has 24 total homeruns. Goodwin-Boyd leads the team with six while Jared Sharkey has five.

On the mound, the Lyons are paced by Mike Bruemmel who is 5-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 55.2 innings. Brady Furdon has thrown 71.2 innings for the staff and is 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA and Dan Southerland is 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 52.0 innings.

The winner of the first round matchup between No. 3 seed Cal Lutheran and No. 6 seed Wheaton will take on the winner of No. 2 UMass-Boston and No. 7 North Central (Ill.) tomorrow, May 27 at 5:45 PT while the losers will play at 2:30 PT.
