ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - Announced this morning by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the Cal Lutheran baseball program landed six All-SCIAC selections with Miguel Salud earning Newcomer of the Year in 2017 as the Kingsmen locked up both the regular season and SCIAC Postseason Tournament titles.
First Team All-SCIAC honorees include seniors Gabe Gunter and Marshall Pautsch and juniors Max Weinstein and Nate Wehner while Salud landed on the Second Team All-SCIAC along with freshman Scott Roberts.
Salud, a one-year member of the squad, was instrumental from the get-go and showed his strength to the SCIAC as the premier closer in the league. In conference play, the righty came out of the bullpen 13 times, earning six saves and a 3-2 record in 23.0 innings in which he struck out 18 for a 3.13 ERA.
As the only repeat All-SCIAC recipient, Wehner had another solid spring after earning Second Team honors in 2016. The right handed starter took the ball nine times, producing a 4-2 record with a pair of saves. He threw two complete games and totaled 51.2 innings of work. Wehner worked his way to 33 strikeouts and finished with a 2.44 ERA.
Weinstein had a breakout season after injuries limited his action a year ago. As the leadoff batter, he led the team in batting average (.370), slugging percentage (.510), at-bats (100), hits (37), homeruns (2) and RBIs (20) while sharing the lead for runs (18). Weinstein walked seven times and stole one base. Defensively, he had a hand in 16 double plays, finishing with 34 putouts and 57 assists as the starting second baseman.
In his final year of collegiate baseball, Gunter and Pautsch each garnered league accolades for the first time. Roaming right field, Gunter was perfect with 40 putouts and one assist for a 1.000 fielding percentage and was often times seed sliding and diving to match catches for CLU. In 24 games, he hit at a .337 clip which came from 33 hits in 98 at-bats. He paced the pack with 11 doubles, adding a triple and a homerun for a .500 slugging percentage, and drew six walks. Gunter drove in 17 runs and scored 17 times.
A senior righty, Pautsch led the Kingsmen staff with 52.1 innings of action, three complete games, a 4-0 record and 50 strikeouts in eight appearances, all starts. He finished with a 3.27 ERA in his last SCIAC season.
Finally, Roberts made a name for himself in his debut season at Cal Lutheran, taking the ball six times, all starts, to lead the staff with a 1.74 ERA and earn a 4-0 record in 31.0 innings. He struck out 24 batters and issued a staff-low six walks as a rookie.
Tanner Nishioka, a senior from Pomona-Pitzer was named the Athlete of the Year while junior Redlands hurler Feliz Minjarez was selected as the Pitcher of the Year. Matt Mark from Caltech earned Coaching Staff of the Year.
Cal Lutheran (31-10) has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Regional play will take place May 18-22 at the University of Texas, Tyler, though the entire field and bracket will not be announced until May 14.
