CLU drops two to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran and La Verne softball teams squared off in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) series at LV Campus West today where the Leopards outscored the Regals 6-4 and 5-2 to sweep the first doubleheader of the season between the squads.

The Leos took an early 1-0 lead before Olivia Leyva started the second with a double and Kendall Marinesi knotted things by stroking an RBI single in her return to the diamond after an earlier season injury. A three-run homerun for Justice Borden in the bottom of the third put the home team back on top, 4-1. CLU chipped away with a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by shortstop Antonia Rapisardi. An inning later, a pair of Regals crossed the plate with Amanda Lewis scoring on a Leyva triple down the right field line and Leyva coming home on an Olivia Serrano single up the middle.Serrano (0-1), who took the ball from Courtney Sooy after 3.0 innings, was tagged with the loss after Katheryn Navarro connected for a two-run, walk-off homerun. Sooy struck out three and Serrano sat down one by way of the K. Leyva finished with two of the five CLU hits and two of the four Regals runs.

In the nightcap, Cal Lutheran outhit La Verne seven to four, but the Leopards walked away with the 5-2 win. LV started hot with a three-run first inning, adding a run in both the second and fifth and CLU scored twice in the top of the fourth. Leyva collected another pair of hits, with a solo homerun, going 2-for-3 while Abbigael Howard went 2-for-2 and drove in the other run. Makenna Pellerin drew a walk and crossed the plate on Howard’s hit. Brittany Workman walked twice at the plate and worked 5.0 innings in the circle, surrendering two runs on two hits with a strike out. Nicole White-Madolora (0-2) started the game and went just 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on two hits.

Cal Lutheran (3-5, 3-3 SCIAC) has a quick turnaround, playing tomorrow, Sunday, March 12, at home against National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) No. 4 Berry (Ga.) in a non-conference series beginning at noon on Hutton Field. A second game will follow.
