Kingsmen Complete Day One at NCAAs
CLU in 25th place after 319 during first round
DESTIN, Fla. -- The Cal Lutheran men’s golf team is in 25th place after a first round combined score of 319 (+31) at the NCAA Division III National Championships taking place Tuesday at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Kingsmen were led Parker Colvin who shot a six-over par 78.
Nerves played a role on day for Cal Lutheran as the Kingsmen collectively had four bogeys and two double-bogeys during the first three holes. Despite the tough start, the Kingsmen would regroup and play better down the stretch, led by Colvin, who had birdies on the 10th and 14th hole and finished the second nine with a score of 39 (+3).
Mikey McGinn and Barret McGinnis both shot an eight-over par 80 while Bobby Griffin was right behind with a nine-over par 81. After a front-nine 41, McGinn rallied at the turn and shot 39 on the back including a pair of birdies. McGinnis was just one-over par after the first nine and played consistently on the back to turn on a 43 on the back-nine. Playing in his first NCAA Championships, Griffin led the Kingsmen with twelve pars on the day.
Senior Chad Kimmelshue never quite got in a rhythm on day one but still managed to record eight pars and finish with a 92 (+20).
Methodist, who shot 290, is the top team in relation to par (+2) as half the field played the par-71 Raven Course, and the other half, including Cal Lutheran played the par-72 Links course. The teams will switch courses for day two before playing rounds three and four at the Raven.
In terms of total strokes, St. John’s (Minn.) (292) sits in third, UT-Tyler (293) is fourth and Illinois Wesleyan is fifth (294) in the 41-team field.
The Kingsmen will have an early start Wednesday as they begin tee times at 7:30 a.m. Griffin gets things started at 7:30 a.m. while McGinnis tees off at 7:40 a.m., Kimmelshue at 7:50 a.m., Colvin at 8:00 a.m. and McGinn at 8:10 a.m.
