Regals Sweep on Day One of Posada Royale Tournament
CLU earns first two wins of the year
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women’s water polo team earned back-to-back one-point victories Friday during the first day of the Posada Royale Tournament at Samuelson Aquatics Center. The Regals upset Division I Villanova 8-7 for their first win of the year before fending off Pomona-Pitzer 9-8 in game two.
Cal Lutheran trailed 2-0 after the first five minutes after Lauren Peachey and Callan Edwards both netted goals for Villanova. However, Adrienne Ingalla would score two straight goals in the last minute to pull CLU even at 2-2 after the first quarter.
Villanova pulled back ahead in the second quarter thanks to goals from Edwards, Sadie Dutcher and Erin Malone. Ingalla continued to have the hot hand for Cal Lutheran, scoring two more goals in the quarter and pulled CLU to 5-4 just before the break.
Merry was the star of the third quarter as she came up with four saves and allowed just one goal as CLU tied the game at 6-6 thanks to goals from Ingalla and Shannon Streeter.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Tatiana McCuaig put Cal Lutheran out in front at 7-6 after a put-back goal.
After Villanova tied the game with 2:57 left, CLU responded 25 seconds later with the game-winning goal coming from Morgan McCardell.
Cal Lutheran would hold possession for most of the final two minutes before Villanova had a break-away with 30 seconds left but goalkeeper Gina Merry made a sprawling right-handed save to seal the first win of the season for CLU.
Ingalla led the Regals with five goals and three assists while Streeter had two. Kaylee Kastrup had three steals and two assists.
Game two saw Cal Lutheran jump out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter with Kehua Ai scoring two goals and Jordan Card and Ingalla each netting one.
Pomona-Pitzer would get two goals back in the second period while holding the Regals off the board to get the game back to within one at 4-3 headed into intermission.
Both offenses got it going in the third quarter with Cal Lutheran scoring four goals while Pomona put in three. Ai scored 36 seconds into the quarter, putting CLU up 5-3, but Pomona-Pitzer got back-to-back goals to even the score.
After the teams exchanged goals midway through the quarter, Cal Lutheran scored two unanswered goals to go up 8-6 headed into the final period.
Streeter put CLU up 9-6 after her goal 45 seconds into the fourth quarter as the Regals defense allowed to goals in the final minutes but held on for their second win of the day.
Ai netted three goals while Ingalla finished with two to pace CLU offensively. Kastrup led CLU for the second straight game with five steals.
Cal Lutheran (2-5) will be back in action on Saturday, March 2, at 9:20 a.m. when the Regals hostm SCIAC foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before taking on Long Beach State at 3:10 p.m. on the second day of the Posada Royale Tournament.
