Kingsmen Conclude Regular Season
CLU splits at tri-meet
PASADENA, Calif. – For the final time during the regular season the Cal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team competed in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet in 2013. The tri-meet at Caltech featured host CIT, CLU and Pomona-Pitzer.
Though the Kingsmen nearly caught the Sagehens, it was Pomona-Pitzer who was victorious today, defeating CLU 153-141. Cal Lutheran went on to defeat Caltech for the split.
Ryan Brem won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events today. On the three-meter he was the only diver to break the 200-point plateau, scoring a 211.35. He won the one-meter with a 192.65, edging Ben Grabowski (189.05) from Caltech. Grabowski scored a 199.00 for second on the three-meter as well. Kevin Schultz and Andrew Kirk were third and fourth on both boards.
The Kingsmen started off with a team victory in the 400 Medley Relay as Aaron Waters, Anthony Nguyen, Kyle Eckhart and Chase Miller combined to swim a 3:39.73, hitting the wall, which was 46 hundredths of a second ahead of the Pomona-Pitzer ‘A’ team.
Waters went on to win the 100 backstroke in 55.96 and the 200 back in 2:04.70, winning by four full seconds.
Cal Lutheran took second and third in the 100 freestyle with Eckhart (49.47) and Miller (49.52) hitting the wall just five tenths of a second apart. Eckhart placed third in the 100 butterfly in 54.41, though he was just under a second off the winning time.
CLU took the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke with Conrad Sheffer and Nguyen going 1:00.69 and 1:02.93, respectively. The duo then repeated the feat in the 200 breast with Sheffer swimming a 2:15.39 ahead of Nguyen in 2:18.80. Sheffer also took the 200 Individual Medley, nearly breaking the two-minute mark, with a swim of 2:00.71.
In the 50 free, Tyler Berg was the second man to the wall in 22.32 behind Hugh Berryman from Pomona-Pitzer.
Mike Potter (17:49.36) was fourth in the mile, shaving more than 30 seconds off his previous season best time while David Sparks (1:52.18) placed fourth in the 200 free, just seven tenths of a second behind the third place finisher. Philip Anderson was fourth in the 100 back with a time of 59.71 as one of five athletes under a minute today. Mason Hill was the top CLU finisher in the 200 fly, also placing fourth in 2:11.26. Another fourth place finish went to Derrick Graham in the 500 free as he hit the wall in 5:05.54.
The meet concluded with a CLU victory in the 200 Free Relay. Miller led off and the Kingsmen never trailed after he went out in 22.52. Eckhart dove in for the second leg, followed by Sheffer, who swam the fastest 50 of the entire event in 21.64, though Berg, the CLU anchor man, was a tenth of a second off the pace to end the race in 21.65.
Cal Lutheran (4-4) will send divers to the SCIAC Preliminaries on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9-10 at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. The event will be hosted by Caltech and diving is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. each day.
