Kingsmen Earn First Win of Winter

CLU takes down La Sierra

Martin Flowers had 15 points and three steals in the first CLU victory of the season.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – For the first time of the season the Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team posted a victory, defeating La Sierra 64-40 at the Gilbert Arena this evening.

Cal Lutheran scored the first seven points in unanswered style and opened an 11-2 lead behind a hot start from Martin Flowers who contributed seven points and a steal in the first five minutes.

Though La Sierra would chip their way back into the game, getting within three at 11-8, the Kingsmen went on a 12-1 run to take a double figure lead at the 6:42 mark in the opening half. Jeremy Sulker-Hall hit ajumper in the paint to put CLU up 21-10 and the Kingsmen never looked back. Dan Wade, Steven Davis and Corey Quintana combined for the final six points of the half.

In the first 20 minutes Cal Lutheran nearly doubled up the Golden Eagles, shooting 53.8 percent from the floor to take a comfortable 36-16 lead into the locker room.

After the break the Kingsmen continued to control the momentum of the game.

The largest lead of the night was 26-points after Sulker-Hall tipped in a missed CLU shot to put the Kingsmen on top 48-22. After a little LSU run, Wadegot a steal and converted a fast break into a pair, giving the Violet and Gold a 20-point advantage at 50-30. The Golden Eagles would never cut the deficit under 20 for the remaining 8:24 of regulation.  

Overall Cal Lutheran shot 42.9 percent as a team, knocking down 7-for-12 from behind the arc (58.3) with three players hitting a pair from long range.

Flowers led all players with 15 points, followed by Michael Palmer. The duo shot 5-for-8 and 4-for-6 from the field, respectively. Each of them, along with Jayvaughn Nettles, connected for two three-pointers apiece. Nettles finished with 10. Palmer was solid at the line, going 4-for-4. Daviswas responsible for a game-high five assists while Wadetallied four.

Defensively, Davis had a good showing as well, with four steals. He joined with teammates Sulker-Halland Quintanato pull down 21 combined rebounds, each grabbing seven. Four of Sulker-Hall’s were offensive rebounds tonight. CLU grabbed 37 total rebounds with 15 on the offensive end of the floor, which led to

LSU was led by 13 points from Bennett Shaw. Three different players had six rebounds apiece and LSU combined for four total blocks in the game.

Cal Lutheran (1-1) will board a plane early tomorrow morning to travel to Hawaii where they will host the 2012 Surf’s Up Classic. Two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams, Cal Lutheran and Whittier, and two Northwest Conference (NWC) teams, George Fox and Pacific, will converge at Kalami High School for the two day tournament.
