CLAREMONT, Calif. - After hitting over .300 as a team in all four sets the Regals defeated Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 on Saturday night at the Rains Center. CLU freshman Rachel Smith recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs.

After trading the first two sets the Regals rallied for a 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-19 win.

Rachel Smith (18), Allison Kerr (14) and Erin Exline (12) combined for 44 of the team's 62 kills. On a 159 total team attacks the Regals committed only nine errors with six coming via the Sagehens blocking.

Cal Lutheran hit .378, .308, .309 and .357 respectively over the four sets while holding Pomona-Pitzer (12-12, 6-5 SCIAC) to under .250 in all four.

Regals setter Jackie Russell delivered 50 assists on the night, her fourth career 50-plus match and second in a row.

Four of five Regals with 25 or more attacks hit .320 or better including a nine-kill performance from senior Cori Hayes.

CLU senior libero Jenna Meligan led the Regals with 19 digs.

Sagehens' Jordan Hammond had a team-high 17 kills while teammate Sarah Amos notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Teammate Heidi Leonard recorded a match-high 30 digs in the loss.

Cal Lutheran (16-10, 8-3 SCIAC) won three straight matches this week with victories over Whittier, La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.

All conference teams have three SCIAC matches remaining with the Regals currently in second place, two games behind current leader Redlands at 10-1.

CLU will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (14-12, 6-5 SCIAC) on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m.

A victory over the Athenas would clinch a berth into the 2009 SCIAC tournament starting on Friday, Nov. 6. In the previous matchup this season CMS defeated CLU 3-2 needing to win the final two sets to knock off the Regals.
