Baseball's Martin Leads Nation, Breaks CLU Record in Triples
Ten three-baggers best in Division III
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran junior Matt Martin was one of only two
players in Division III baseball to eclipse 10 triples, doing so in 35 games
during the 2009 season notching the triples per game title outright. The mark
also breaks the school's 29-year old single season record and 15-year old
career record.
In his first year with the Kingsmen, Martin hit .331 while driving in 16 RBI
primarily as the leadoff hitter. He had two separate six-game stretches with
four triples. One of those spans started with his best offensive game of the
year going 3-for-5 including a grand slam and only a single shy of the cycle.
His season ended on an eight-game hit streak and reached base safely in 12
of the final 13 games played. Martin's speed played a major factor in his
record setting season and aided his ability to steal bases swiping 19-of-23
during 2009.
Cal Lutheran (32-11) capped of the season making its first NCAA postseason
appearance since 2001 and NCAA postseason victory since 2000.
