Volleyball Picks up Pair of Conference Wins

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The California Lutheran University volleyball team improved to 5-1 in conference play with match wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer on Friday and Saturday respectively. Senior Summer Plante-Newman has closed in on the CLU school record for kills in a career, needing ten more to tie the mark.

On Saturday the Regals took a 3-0 match win over Pomona with set scores of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-16. Junior Cori Hayes posted match-highs with 14 kills and a .778 kill percentage, with 14 kills on 18 attempts and no errors.

Plante-Newman added six kills and brought her career total to 1,045 and ten shy of the school record (1,055) set by Sally Jahraus. She also recorded match-highs with four aces and 13 digs.

Senior Lindsey Benson ran the offense with 30 assists and added four kills. Sophomores Megan Thorpe and Erin Exline each chipped in with six kills and senior Elicia Hildreth tallied 11 digs.

Sarah Amos led the Sagehens with five kills.

Cal Lutheran (13-4, 5-1) hit .366 as a team and held Pomona (11-6, 2-3) to a .039 hitting percentage.

On Friday, the Regals came away with a 3-1 match win at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The game scores were 25-18, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-15. Plante-Newman posted 12 kills in the match.

Cal Lutheran will host Redlands on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. for another conference match.
