Kingsmen Roll Past Beavers for Second Time

CLU reaches highest point total of the season in win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 91-48 victory over conference opponent Caltech on Wednesday. Fourteen Kingsmen played in the game and 13 of them scored at least two points as the team notched its highest point total of the season.

After opening up the contest with an early 21-6 advantage 10 minutes into the game, the Kingsmen built their lead to 51-25 by the end of the first half when Greg Grimm made a backcourt steal and hit a three with time winding down.

Andy Meier poured in a team high with 15 points (5-of-9 field goals) in 17 minutes. Grimm added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, forwards Mychal Owens and Aaron Fisher each pitched in 10 apiece.

The Kingsmen got a strong effort from Danny Hagen inside with six points, six rebounds and two blocks in 16 minutes.

CLU shot 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field for the game and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) on three point attempts. They out rebounded Caltech 41-25 and turned the ball over just 14 times compared to 29 giveaways by the Beavers.

As a team, CLU picked up 24 steals, led by Grimm (6), Chad Acerboni (5) while Owens and Lucas Gums both each added three.

Caltech, who was without SCIAC Athlete of the Week Travis Haussler, was led by Bryan Hires’ 19 points and eight rebounds.

Cal Lutheran (18-3, 8-2 SCIAC) will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in another SCIAC match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
