WHITTIER, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s basketball team wrapped up the Purple Gold Classic at Whittier College on Saturday night defeating UC Santa Cruz, 61-48. CLU freshman Aaron Fisher scored a career high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting in just 22 minutes as the Kingsmen pulled away late in regulation.

Both teams managed to make just eight baskets each and neither trailed by more than six points in the first half. Cal Lutheran managed to grab the lead with just under seven minutes left in the opening stanza and by two at the end of 20 minutes.

The Kingsmen took just 16 shots in the second half, but made 11 of them to shot nearly over 68 percent from the floor while holding the Banana Slugs to 7-of-25 from the field. Fisher and sophomore Andy Meier combined to go 8-of-10 from the field for 22 points in the second half to push past UCSC.

Cal Lutheran (10-1) has not reached the 10-win plateau this early in a season since the 1993-1994 squad that started 15-0 and reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA playoffs.

CLU will return to Whittier College next week and face the Poets to open conference play on Saturday, January 12 at 7:30 pm following the women’s game at 5 pm.

Box Score: CLU 61, UCSC 48 F
