RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s basketball team earned a 59-49 victory on the road Saturday night against La Sierra University. The Kingsmen took a one-point lead with 16:23 left in the first half and would not trail the remainder of the game.
The Golden Eagles (1-6) soared out to a 5-0 lead before when CLU sophomore Kyle Knudsen emphatically knocked down a three-pointer, his first score of an 11-point game, cutting the deficit to two. Following a Mychal Owens bucket just 3:37 after tip-off the Kingsmen took the lead.
Cal Lutheran led by 10 at the break in large part to a 20-12 team rebounding advantage and going 8-for-11 from the foul line. The team would go on to shoot even better in the second half at the charity stripe by converting 15-for-16 attempts.
CLU senior guard Deshion Inniss scored a game-high 22 points including half of his points coming from an 11-of-12 performance from the free throw line.
The Kingsmen defense caused 16 turnovers, notched 11 steals and allowed LSU to shoot only 33.3% for the game (17-of-51).
CLU's Lucas Gums and Aaron Fisher came off the bench providing 10 points in 30 minutes combined in Saturday’s victory.
Cal Lutheran (2-1) will return home next Saturday, December 15 at 2:30 pm against Chapman University. The contest will be the first of a men’s-women’s doubleheader with both games against Chapman.
