CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran softball team hit the road for a pair of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) games against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon and came away with a doubleheader sweep at Wig Beach Field.
CLU def. PP 2-1 (10)
In the first game of the day, the Regals battled into extra innings for the fifth time this season, and third time in the last five games. After nine innings of scoreless softball in a textbook pitcher's duel, CLU capitalized on two Sagehens errors in the top of the tenth to bring two runs home. With runners on second and third, Emily Manwell hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the go-ahead run while an errant throw allowed Catherine Slabaugh to cross the plate.
Courtney Sooy pitched all 10 innings, allowing just five hits while striking out three in a masterful performance. At the plate, the Regals were led by Makenna Pellerin, who went 2-for-4, while Sooy, Slabaugh, Olivia Leyva, Amanda Lewis and Mikaela Mayhew each added one.
CLU def. PP 6-1
In the night cap, CLU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, due to a four-run fourth inning, and cruised to a 6-1 victory for the series sweep.
Olivia Serrano was instrumental for the Regals, earning the win in the circle after throwing six innings and allowing just one run and six hits, while also leading CLU with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Leyva came through with three big RBIs, two of which came from a double during the fourth inning. Mayhew scored twice in the game and seven other Regals finished with base hits.
Cal Lutheran (9-13, 6-8 SCIAC) returns to the friendly confines of Hutton Field with a doubleheader against Whittier on Saturday, Apr. 8 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
