THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) softball play continued at Hutton Field today where the Cal Lutheran squad dropped a pair to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-1 and 6-0, on a cool yet sunny afternoon.
Game one belonged to CMS from the start. The Athenas scored twice in the top of the first, which represented the ultimate winning run, though CLU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the inning. Olivia Leyva reached on an error and came in to score on a Courtney Sooy RBI single.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps added two runs in the third and another pair in the sixth with Carly Roleder going 3-for-3 and both Chloe Amarilla and Alexa Heydenberk collecting two hits. Anna Gurr (8-3) went a complete game for the win.
The four Cal Lutheran hits in game one came from Sooy, Mikaela Mayhew, Antonia Rapisardi and Jacy Watanabe. Sooy (5-4) threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five.
In game two, a scoreless battle ensued through four innings. CMS posted a crooked number in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single from Ande Troutman followed by an RBI single by Roleder to take a 3-0 advantage. The Athenas tacked on three more in the sixth.
During a slow offensive day, the CLU bats were quiet. The three second game hits were from Leyva who tripled and Amanda Lewis who collected two.
Cal Lutheran (7-13, 4-8 SCIAC) continues league play at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, April 1 with the first of two games set for noon.
