Regals Take First From Tigers; Stumble in Game Two of SCIAC Series

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran softball worked its way to a 3-2 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory today on Hutton Field, taking down Occidental in game one of a doubleheader before falling 6-1 in the second game of the series.

In game one, CLU pushed a pair across the plate in the second as Olivia Leyva singled, stole second and moved up to third on a field error that allowed Courtney Sooy to reach. Sooy promptly stole second and both came in to score, Sooy hustling around third and sliding home ahead of a tag attempt, as Abbigael Howard put the ball in play to the right side. The Regals added a third to the team tally in déjà vu like fashion from yesterday as Leyva led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right centerfield and Sooy lifted a sacrifice fly to plate the third baseman with the ultimate winning run.

Occidental was held at bay through six, though the Tigers outhit the Regals 12-7. A costly error allowed Oxy to plate a pair in the final frame, but Cal Lutheran remained in control throughout the contest.

Cal Lutheran continues to execute in the field, led by Mikaela Mayhew who had 10 touches with five putouts and five assists at second base. Makenna Pellerin tallied eight putouts at first base for the Violet and Gold.

Sooy (4-3) improved her pitching record, throwing another complete game, striking out two and not allowing an earned run. Leyva was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and Jacy Watanabe ran out two infield singles for the Regals from the nine spot. Mayhew and Antonia Rapisardi collected the other two hits.

In game two, Nicole White-Madolora (0-3) got the start. In a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, she reacted to a comebacker to turn a 1-2-3 double play with Lexie Findley and Pellerin, though an RBI single two pitches later gave Oxy an early lead. Pellerin dug out a low throw to end the inning without more damage. Unfortunately, Oxy tagged White-Madolora for four more, adding a total of five in the top of the second on a bases clearing double to the centerfield wall from Natalie Glover, a wild pitch and an RBI single. Olivia Serrano took over in the circle after one out was recorded and the inning ended on a 6-4-3 double play between Rapisardi, Mayhew and Pellerin. Serrano went 5.2 innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one run while striking out one.

Facing a 6-0 deficit, the Regals were unable to string anything together until the bottom of the fifth when the home group gritted down and put up a crooked number. Watanabedrew a leadoff walk and moved up on a fielder's choice followed by a passed ball. Rapisardi lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Watanabe and get CLU on the board. An opportunity for more was squandered with a ground ball and a popup and the Violet and Gold were unable to get anything else going over the remainder of the game.

CLU left seven runners on, including bases loaded in the bottom of the third. The four hits came from Mayhew, Pellerin, Serrano and Watanabe.

Defensively, Mayhew had seven more chances, with a putout and five assists and Rapisardi had a putout and six assists while Pellerin posted 15 putouts at first base for the Regals in game two.

Occidental (4-13, 3-7 SCIAC) got a solid day from Nyla Gatison who was 3-for-5 in the first game and 2-for-4 in game two for the Tigers while Alexis Funaki recorded two hits and Madison Romero had two hits, a run and an RBI in game one. In the nightcap, Cora Roberts went 3-for-4 for the Black and Orange and Alexis Funaki (5-2) threw a complete game with two strikeouts.

Cal Lutheran (6-10, 4-6) concludes non-conference play on Wednesday, March 22 with a mid-week, spring break series against Williams (Mass.) on Hutton Field with first pitch of game one scheduled for noon with a second game to follow.
