THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Just 24 hours removed from a conference doubleheader, the Cal Lutheran softball team was back on the diamond at Hutton Field where the Regals hosted National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) No. 4 Berry (Ga.) for a pair of non-conference games. The Vikings took both, 14-0 and 12-0, in five innings and served as a tough challenge for the home squad.
The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first frame, adding in the second, third and fourth. CLU threatened to score in the second, loading the bases on a pair of hits from Catherine Slabaugh and Mikaela Mayhew and a walk from Makenna Pellerin, but the runners were all stranded. Slabaugh added a second hit in the fourth inning
Courtney Sooy (2-3) was tagged with the loss after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits. Nicole White-Madolora worked the final 2.0 innings., striking out the final batter in the fifth as CLU held Berry off the board.
Kassie Howard (7-0) remained undefeated after throwing a complete game for Berry. Five players had two hits apiece and leadoff batter Brittany Ferrell was 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
Game two was more of the same as the Vikings came out firing, scoring on a suicide squeeze to begin the offensive output. Berry continued to execute and do all the small things right, pushing three runs across in first, adding to the total in the third, fourth and fifth.
For Cal Lutheran, Olivia Serrano (0-2) earned her first collegiate start, going 4.0 innings, allowing just four earned runs on eight hits. Sierra Scali took over in the fifth for her first appearance in the circle and allowed three runs on two hits.
Scali then led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and pinch hitter Alyssa Anderson and designated player Emily Manwell connected for back-to-back singles to load the bases, but unfortunately the game would end with the bases loaded. Anderson broke up the no-hitter by Marie Callop (6-0) as the senior tossed a complete game.
Berry was also led offensively by Callop who added a 2-for-2 day at the plate with three runs and an RBI while Elisabeth Federici was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
Cal Lutheran (3-9) continues non-conference play on Friday, March 17 with two games against Denison (Ohio) to kick off spring break week. Teams will take the field at noon.
