REDLANDS, Calif. - In a pair of high scoring games, the Cal Lutheran baseball team split its doubleheader matchup on the road against Redlands on Saturday afternoon. The Kingsmen rallied for a 10-7 victory in game one before falling 8-6 in game two to drop the series to the Bulldogs.
CLU def. UR 10-7
After scoring only two runs in the series opener on Friday, the Kingsmen exploded for five runs in the first inning on Saturday. Max Weinstein, Gabe Gunter and Jimmy Jauregui all singled while Alec Iniguez, Weston Clark and Brad Fullerton were all hit by a pitch in the first six plate appearances. Trey Saito also walked in the inning and CLU took advantage of a wild pitch and passed ball to fill up the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first, including a two-run homerun by Rainier Aguilar, and added another in the second to cut the Kingsmen lead to one, 5-4.
An RBI single from Saito in the third tacked on another run for the Violet and Gold, but the Bulldogs snagged the lead after plating three runs in the seventh.
Trailing 7-6 entering the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Nick Cohan sparked a rally with a leadoff single. After Saito reached on an error, Austin Kay reached on a bunt single to load the bases. With one out, Sinjin Todd drew a walk to bring in the tying run while Gunter brought home the go-ahead run on a sac fly to right field. Clark also walked with the bases loaded to bring home another run. In the ninth inning, Weinstein provided an insurance run with an RBI single to secure the 10-6 win.
Gunter finished 3-for-4 at the dish while Cohan and Weinstein each collected two hits apiece. Jauregui led CLU with two RBIs and Cohan scored two runs.
Miguel Salud earned the win after pitching three innings of relief and striking out two. Marshall Pautsch went six innings in the start and struck out four while allowing six hits and four earned runs.
