INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -Announced this week by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), sophomore Cal Lutheran swimmer Mardell Ramirez was selected as a 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving National Championships qualifier in the 200 freestyle.
After setting a new Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), SCIAC Championships Meet and CLU record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.10, the first-year swimmer was among the top student-athletes in the country in the event and will now compete for a National title.
NCAA Championships will be held at the Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas from March 13-17, hosted by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the City of Shenandoah.
Ramirez becomes just the fourth CLU swimmer to advance to the national stage and the first since butterflier Jill Minehan in 2008. Also previously representing the Regals were Christa Ratcliff (IM, breaststroke) and Merle Vermillion (free/breaststroke) who both qualified in 2007.
At the SCIAC Championships Feb. 15-18, Ramirez racked up a trio of All-SCIAC nods including her gold in the 200 free, and third place finishes in both the 50 free (23.884) and 100 free (51.77), which are both new Cal Lutheran records as well.
Ramirez will be joined by men's swimming and diving teammate Benjamin Brewer who is also competing on the national level for the first time by earning a selection in the 500 free and 1650 in which he also set a new SCIAC, Meet and school record last week.
