PASADENA, Calif. - On the road inside the Braun Athletics Center this afternoon, the Cal Lutheran men's basketball team cruised to a convincing 94-60 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory over Caltech, marking its third straight win.
After exchanging buckets early, Kyle Ferreira converted a three-pointer to give CLU a 9-6 lead with 16:42 remaining in the opening half, sparking a 14-0 run to break things open. The Kingsmen continued to control the pace of play for the remainder of the opening frame, taking a 48-23 halftime lead, and throughout the second half as they never trailed.
Cal Lutheran out played CIT in all facets of the game and a dozen players saw action for the Violet and Gold in the victory. CLU has surpassed 90 points in each of its last three games.
Offensive Highlights: Overall, CLU shot nearly 60 percent from the floor at 59.4 with a 44.4 percent three-point clip and was hot at the free-throw line, going a combined 10-for-11 (90.9 percent). Nine different Kingsmen scored today, led by 22 points from Ferreira who was 9-for-10 from the field, including a 3-for-4 showing from long range. A career-night from Robert Ambartsumyan included 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Austin Cole and Wolfgang Wood also reached double figures with 18 and 13 points, respectively, and Caleb Richey dished out a game-high and career-best 14 assists for the Kingsmen, adding eight points. Sam Cirillo, Blake Miles, Kenneth Moffett and Lukas Swidler all added to the tally.
Defensive Highlights: Cal Lutheran out rebounded Caltech 41-23 and earned 11 offensive boards. Ten players pulled down at least one with Ferreira notching a team-leading six rebounds. Ambartsumyan, Cole and Moffett each had five and Richey and Reagan Chapman added four apiece. Richey tallied four steals while Ambartsumyan grabbed two. Chapman also had two blocks and Jacob Dawe recorded one.
The Opponent: Caltech (3-11, 2-3 SCIAC) was led by 16 points and five steals from David LeBaron while Ricky Galliani added 11 and Alec Andrews handed out six assists.
Cal Lutheran (11-3, 4-1) travels to La Verne on Thursday, Jan. 19 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against the Leopards.
