LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's basketball team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on Sunday, defeating Occidental on the road, 74-65.
Offensive Highlights: Austin Cole led the Kingsmen in scoring for the third consecutive game, finishing with 27 points on a 9-14 shooting performance. The sophomore guard also shot 5-9 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Adrian Francis finished with 16 points, while Wolfgang Wood added another 15 for the Violet and Gold. Blake Miles and Francis each had two assists.
Defensive Highlights: Francis led Cal Lutheran with eight rebounds, while also adding two steals. Wood finished with seven rebounds, and Caleb Richey added another six for CLU. The Kingsmen outrebounded the Tigers 37-30, leading to 14 second-chance points.
The Opponent: Andrew Johnson scored 27 points for the Tigers after shooting 11-18, and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Austin Dewitz led Occidental with seven rebounds.
Notables: With their seventh straight win, the Kingsmen are off to their best start since the 1993-1994 season.
Cal Lutheran (7-0, 1-0 SCIAC) will return to Gilbert Arena on Monday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. to play Puget Sound (Wash.) in a non-conference matchup.
