Regals Fall to Panthers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on Saturday night as they took on Chapman, falling just short to the Panthers in a 1-0 contest.

As the thick fog rolled out over the bleachers and onto the pitch, both teams took the field. It was a well-fought first half for both teams, with both sides creating opportunities on offense. Chapman took the first shot of the match in the eighth minute but the ball sailed high, leaving both teams scoreless.

In the 42nd minute, Taryn Tanaka lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out and sent the ball toward the top of net, but Coral Hasley made the jumping save to parry the ball off the crossbar and out of play. The Panthers took the corner kick shortly after and the Regal defense quickly gathered the ball and began the counter attack. Kali Youngdahl delivered a well-timed through ball to Nikole Prelooker, who fired a shot toward the bottom right corner that was saved by Kristin Kleinow, leaving the game scoreless heading into halftime.

As the second half began the fog grew thicker, and both teams came out firing. Chapman would strike first as they scored the lone goal of the night in the 46th minute when Hannah Holden broke through the defense and sent the ball into the lower right corner. Cal Lutheran continued to push on offense, outshooting the Panthers 10 to three in the second period, but could not capitalize. In the 90th minute, CLU would have its final scoring opportunity when Youngdahl played the ball out to Bri Pinal who fired a quick shot just high, hitting the crossbar and going out of play.

Cal Lutheran concluded the night with four shots on target, each coming from a different player. Zandra Stewart, Olivia Leyva, Julia Kearns, and Prelooker each had a shot on goal.

Cal Lutheran (11-2-3, 5-2-3 SCIAC) will return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 4:00 p.m. as they travel to take on Pomona-Pitzer in an away SCIAC contest.
