CLAREMONT, Calif. - The defending national champion and No. 1 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team started its season at the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament this weekend where the Regals finished with a four game, 12 set sweep defeating No. 10 Hendrix, Trinity (Tex.), Stevens and Cabrini.
CLU def. No. 10 Hendrix 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-11)
Cal Lutheran came out strong and held a lead the entire first set. Hope Stewart led the Regals with 13 kills and nine digs while Amanda Roberts started her season off solid with seven kills and 12 digs. Sarah Pappas and Monica Lundgren followed suit with nine and six kills, respectively. Lundgren also put up six blocks for the Regals.
CLU def. Trinity (Tex.) 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24)
Trinity (Tex.) proved a tough opponent for the Regals as head coach Kellee Roesel used only two subs through all three sets. The Regals were able to pull away from the Tigers with top notch play from all eight players. Stewart and Michelle Lawrence each earned a double-double on the night. Lawrence who saw limited play in the first match finished with 10 kills and 11 digs. Stewart continued her hot play with 13 kills and 10 digs. Roberts and Lundgren each tallied six kills, while Roberts also acquired 12 digs. Nicki Tetherow led the defensive end with 19 digs for the Regals and Jamie Smith helped with a match-high of 33 assists.
CLU def. Stevens 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-18)
The Regals started Saturday strong with every starter contributing in the points and kill columns. Stewart led the way again with 13 kills and six digs. Roberts and Lawrence matched each other with 10 kills apiece along with notching nine and 16 digs, respectively. Tetherow complemented Lawrence with 16 digs and one ace. Lundgren tallied eight kills and Pappas followed with six of her own. Smith finished the match with 41 assists, her highest of the season so far for the Regals.
CLU def. Cabrini 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-13)
Dianna Rohrer and Molly Holloway led the Regals with seven kills to go with nine and two digs apiece, respectively. Stewart, Roberts and Lundgren followed suit with six kills and Roberts had a team-high of 13 digs. Hannah Nua notched the next highest with five kills and three digs. Dani Gonzalez put up 11 digs in two out of the three sets for the Regals.
Notables: Carly Rose Howard and Amy McKee made their collegiate debut and Howard recorded three digs. Charlie Furey made her debut for Cal Lutheran as well and notched one kill. Smith finished the tournament with 126 assists.
Next up: Cal Lutheran will host the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational Sept. 9-10 in Gilbert Arena. The Regals will face Puget-Sound (Wash.) at 3:00 p.m. and No. 14 Wis.-Whitewater at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Saturday will hold two more matches against East Tex. Baptist and Emory (Ga.) at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
