THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Cal Lutheran softball team welcomed Brandeis (Mass.) to Hutton Field, where the Regals prevailed over the Judges 4-1 in six innings.
After a scoreless first inning, Hannah Brown brought the Violet and Gold alive after legging out a double on shallow fly ball to centerfield. After a Scooter Rapisardi walk, Mikaela Mayhew stepped up to the plate and roped a single to right field to drive in Brown for the first run of the game.
Holding on to their 1-0 lead, Mayhew and Brown connected once again to give CLU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Brown led off the inning with another double, this time lining one to left, and Mayhew singled to left to bring her home.
In the top of the fifth, Blake Lewis continued her torrid start to the season with a solo shot to right center for her third homer of the year. Later in the inning, Brown doubled for the third time and Rapisardi came through with an RBI single to give CLU a 4-0 lead.
The Judges tacked on a run in the sixth, but with the rain pouring down, the game was called after the inning.
Courtney Sooy (3-2) was lights out on the mound, throwing a complete game and striking out four while scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run.
Melissa Soleimani (1-1) picked up the loss for Brandeis after allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.
Brown led CLU at the plate going 3-for-3 with three doubles and three runs scored while Mayhew finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Brittany Reed, Jacy Watanabe, Andrea Brackpool, Rapisardi and B. Lewis tallied the other hits for the Regals.
Danielle Novotny led the Judges at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing.
Cal Lutheran (5-4) will return to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) this Saturday, Feb. 20 with a doubleheader against Whittier beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Hutton Field.
