SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On the road last night, the Cal Lutheran men's volleyball team battled Santa Barbara City College to four sets, dropping the match by a 3-1 margin (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-14).
Offensive Highlights: The first set ended on a Robert Rutecki service ace at 25-20 for the only CLU win of the day as the Kingsmen combined to hit .250 from the field. Rutecki finished with 10 total kills and Hunter Horn led all players with 14. Keaton Arutian handed out a match-high 39 assists and both Rutecki and Jamal Balkhi put down a pair of aces.
Defensive Highlights: CLU combined for eight total block including six solo stop with two from Rutecki and one apiece from Horn, Michael Campbell, Kristian Gallardo and Nicholas Oertli. Balkhi led the way with 13 digs and Rutecki added 10 for a double-double.
The Opponent: It was the season opener for the SBCC Vaqueros. Leading the way were Robert Gulvin with 12 kills and Kyle Smiley with 33 assists nine digs, 2.5 blocks and two service aces.
Notables: The Kingsmen are still after their first match victory as a member of the NCAA.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (0-9) returns to the Gilbert Arena on Friday, Feb. 5 to host Moorpark College with a 6:00 p.m. first serve scheduled.
