PASADENA, Calif. - On the road for the second straight game, the Cal Lutheran men's basketball team traveled to Caltech where the Kingsmen earned a 77-56 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory tonight at the Braun Athletics Center.
Though the Violet and Gold took an 8-2 lead to start the night off, a 7-0 Caltech run gave the Beavers their only lead of the game on a KC Emezie jumper five minutes in. After a CLU timeout, the Kingsmen went on a 12-2 run sparked by a pair of Arik Smith free-throws that included and-one's from John Green and Martin Flowers, respectively. Flowers added a second three-point play at the 10:20 mark to push the CLU lead to double figures, a gap they would not relinquish for the remainder of the half. Cal Lutheran opened as much as a 17-point lead in the first frame and went into the locker rooms with a 40-29 cushion.
The second half was more of the same as the Kingsmen outscored the Beavers 37-27 and controlled the pace of play throughout the entire 20 minutes.
On a night when a dozen different players stepped on the court for CLU, a quartet of players reached double figures, headlined by a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double showing from Smith. Connor McGuire and Coltrane Powdrill poured in 14 apiece and Flowers finished with 12. Green also had a solid night with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting. Smith and Dan Wade each handed out six assists and Powdrill chipped in with five. Both McGuire and Powdrill tallied five rebounds and Smith stole the ball four times with Flowers and McGuire earning a pair of steals apiece.
Caltech (1-11, 0-3 SCIAC) was led by Emezie with a game-high 18 points. Nasser Al-Rayes also reached double digits for the Beavers with 13 points while adding 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Cal Lutheran (10-2, 4-0) will be home at the Gilbert Arena on Saturday, Feb. 17 to play the back end of a split double-header with the women's basketball team. Both squads will host Occidental and the Kingsmen will tip off at 4:00 p.m.
