Regals Season Opens with Draw
Redlands, Pacific and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earn victories
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The 2014 Best Western Thousand Oaks Inn Classic hosted by Cal Lutheran featured four women’s soccer games at William Rolland Stadium on Friday. While the day started with a blowout, it ended with an overtime thriller.
The most exciting game of the day featured host Cal Lutheran against sister school Pacific Lutheran in a scoreless double overtime affair. The teams were evenly matched throughout, though the Regals peppered the PLU goal during the first OT with four shots, including two on target.
CLU outshot PLU 13-9 with Kristin Bailey and Takara Mitsui recording six and eight saves, respectively, and the Regals earned six corner kicks to the Lutes’ five. In her first collegiate game for Cal Lutheran Kali Youngdahl fired off five shots with three on goal while freshman classmate Bri Pinal and junior Nancy Nunez had three chances apiece. Charlotte Rosen was aggressive in the middle for Cal Lutheran in her debut. Also appearing in the Violet and Gold for the first time were Kirsten Bergseth, Olivia Leyva, Alicia Singleton and Sarah Wardle.
The day started with a shellacking by Redlands in a 6-1 victory over Willamette. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead on back-to-back goals in the 6th and 7th minutes, respectively, from Tanya Haggen and McKenzie Oliger before Cassie Lively netted a third from more than 15 yards out in the 14th minute. Following the intermission UR added another pair on a header from Amy Pumputis, assisted by Haggen, and Kate Frame got in on the scoring to push the advantage to 5-0 in the 56th minute of play.
WU put up a crooked number with just over 16 minutes remaining when Emmy Manset found the back of the net after Jaclyn Parnell hit the post. Earlier in the half Manset had another opportunity by earning a one-on-one, though her shot sailed wide left. The Bearcats had the run of play in the final 20 minutes, but ultimately fell short.
Erin Lau tacked on a goal as well, providing a double hat-trick for the Bulldogs with the sixth goal of the day late in regulation.
UR took 14 shots and Willamette finished with 12. Each team tallied four saves and four corner kicks.
In the second game of the day, La Verne netted the first goal of the contest early in the opening stanza and controlled the pace of play for nearly 70 minutes, but a surging Pacific team swayed play, scoring twice over the final six minutes to earn the 2-1 victory. Jamie Weaver was the lone goal scorer for the Leopards on an assist from Kelsey Varner and the lead held until the 84th minute.
Pacific turned to Karmyn Plechot, on a pass from Lucy Almao to equalize the score and at the 88:59 mark McKenna Davidson put a penalty kick in the back of the net to secure the win.
The teams were even with both squads taking six shots. Kristina Morris (PU) notched three saves and Delanie Pacheco (LV) finished with a pair. Pacific held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Neither Claremont-Mudd-Scripps nor Southwestern (Tex.) scored in the opening half of the third game, but the Athenas broke through in the 54th minute with the ultimate game winner from Makella Brems. Ashley Barnhill and Natalie Ricci teamed up for the second score of the contest late in the second stanza for the 2-0 win.
Overall, CMS outshot the Pirates 26-0 and each SU goalie, Kylie Hunt and Katherine Rodgers, recorded five saves. Brems paced the field with four shots, three on target, and three other Athena players had three opportunities apiece.
The 2014 Best Western Thousand Oaks Inn Classic will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 31 with four more games beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running each two hours at William Rolland Stadium.
