THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A year removed from a break-out men’s soccer season in 2013, head coach Dan Kuntz rolled out the 2014 Cal Lutheran schedule, which features some tough early opponents and another challenging league portion, today.

For the second consecutive year the Kingsmen will combine to play three non-conference games against a pair of teams from the Northwest Conference and a single-game against UC Santa Cruz to start off the semester. In the short time span of six days, CLU takes to the pitch three times.

The Second Annual Kingsmen Kickoff Classic will be co-hosted with Redlands and feature the two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) squads as well as the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) and Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) both of the NWC.  Games will take place simultaneously at CLU and UR on Friday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 31.

William Rolland Stadium at Cal Lutheran will serve as the site for five games on the first day of the competition season in conjunction with a two-day, eight-game, 10-team women’s tournament from Aug. 29 to 31. On Friday night the Kingsmen will take the field for the first time of the fall against UPS to kick off their 2014 campaign.

On Sunday, Aug. 31 the Violet and Gold are set to face off with sister program PLU for the second game of the season. The challenging start to the schedule will wrap up with the final non-league match of the year against the UCSC Banana Slugs. All three games will begin at 7:30 p.m. under the lights.

“We open with Puget Sound who made it to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament last season, so that will be a stiff challenge, but we are excited about the opportunity to play them,” Kuntz shared. “We have some experience coming back, but this is a different team and they need to develop their own chemistry this season.” He continued, “Some of these student-athletes got a taste of what it is like to advance to the National Tournament last year and we want to get back, but our focus will be on competing in each game this season.”

After the grueling preseason schedule, Cal Lutheran heads right into league play. The Kingsmen will alternate between a pair of road and home games throughout the remainder of the season.

SCIAC play begins at Caltech on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4:00 p.m. and follows with a tilt at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, Sept. 13. The home league opener for Cal Lutheran will feature a pair of Violet and Gold teams as CLU welcomes Whittier to Ventura County.

The final home series of the year will pit the Kingsmen against the Bulldogs of Redlands and the Panthers from Chapman with the game against CU on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. also serving as senior night.

With the exception of a 4:00 p.m. start time at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Oct. 8 all SCIAC games will begin at 7:00 p.m.

The SCIAC Post Season Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5-8 at a site yet to be determined. NCAA Division III Regional and National play will follow, beginning the weekend of Nov. 15-16, again at a location not yet known. The NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships will take place in late November and early December.
