MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After guiding the No. 5 Cal Lutheran baseball team to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament titles in back-to-back years, the senior duo of Nicho DellaValle and Aaron Roth was selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week for the timeframe of April 28-May 4.

Last weekend each player was selected to the 2014 Second Annual SCIAC Baseball Post Season All-Tournament Team as the Kingsmen swept through the field to earn the league’s Automatic Qualification (AQ) to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Roth, who has been the CLU closer for two years came in from the bullpen to throw 6.0 total innings in a pair of three-inning saves, pushing his season total to 11, just one shy of his school record that was set in the spring of 2013.

The senior hurler sat down five via strike out and surrendered just two hits while facing two men over the minimum. In his first inning of action over the weekend he got all three outs against La Verne with strike outs (two looking and one swinging). Sunday in the title game he worked out of a two-on, no out jam unscathed and faced just one batter over the minimum in his appearance. Roth was on the hill for the clinching game for the second straight year as he forced a ground ball to third base to end the regular season and send the Kingsmen into the Playoffs.

DellaValle was chosen as the All-Tournament shortstop after accumulating a tournament-high .600 batting average in three games with a .733 on base percentage as he reached a total of 11 times with six hits (one double), four walks, a hit by pitch and a fielder’s choice while scoring a tournament-best six times in the 3-0 sweep.

Playing both defensive spots up the middle, DellaValle spent the majority of his time at short before shifting over to second base late in each game. He contributed with a combined three putouts and 12 assists, which included a number of diving stops, two double plays and a pick off rundown.

Both become repeat D3baseball.com TOW recipients after earning the same accolades a year ago. DellaValle was recognized on April 9, 2013 and Roth was selected on April 23, 2013.

The pair joins CLU catcher Spencer DuBois as D3baseball.com Team of the Week selection this spring after the junior backstop was honored on April 1, 2014.

Cal Lutheran (34-8) will play in the 2014 NCAA West Regional at Linfield (Ore.) College between May 14-18. Final seedings of the 56 advancing teams and match-ups will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday, May 11.
