McGinn Headed Back to NCAA Tourney
CLU senior earns individual bid
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –For the third straight year, Cal Lutheran golfer Mikey McGinn will play in the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships. The announcement on Monday featured the 210 student-athletes selected to compete from May 11-16 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. hosted by Guilford College.
The field is comprised of 31 automatic qualifications (AQ) from Pool A, which is conferences with an automatic team bid, three teams from Pool B, which is made up of independent institutions and seven selections from Pool C, which includes all remaining institutions. Additionally, five student-athletes not part of a team chosen will represent his respective school at the tournament.
McGinn has been one of the most consistent individual golfers in the country at the Division III level for the last three seasons. In 2013 he earned Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-America status and is a two-time Ping All-West Region and First Team All-SCIAC recipient and is likely to repeat again in his final campaign.
From the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) the AQ went to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with both La Verne and Redlands earning team bids as well.
The top five individuals were selected from the remaining players who had not qualified and include McGinn, Brian Burt (Hampden-Sydney), Rory Doll (Nebraska Wesleyan), Alex Kapraun (St. Thomas – Minn.) and Rock O’Connell (Hampden-Sydney).
All golfers are guaranteed two rounds of play at the resort, which features two courses, the East and West. The courses served as the site of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships. At the conclusion 36-holes, cuts will be made and the advancing teams and individuals will play the final two rounds to determine a national champion.
University of Texas-Tyler claimed the 2013 edition for the second time in school history while Brad Shigezawa (CMS) will look to defend his individual title in 2014.
McGinn and head coach Jeff Lindgren will travel out for a pair of practice rounds on Sunday and Monday, May 10-11 before competition gets underway.
