Hird Leads Kingsmen on Day Two of SCIAC Championships

CLU completes second round

BEAUMONT, Calif. – On day two of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships at the Oak Valley Golf Course, Cal Lutheran clung to the fourth spot, using a second round 303 to tally a 36-hole total of 609 with one more day to play.

As a team, the Kingsmen took three strokes off the first day tally with three individuals using fewer swings. All four scores today were 79 and under and a fifth round was an 80.

Leading the way for CLU was sophomore Alex Hird with a team-low, two-over 74, improving by eight strokes from his opening round, as he shot even-par on a dozen holes today. He currently sits 20th overall with a 156 (+12).

Also taking strokes off of his opening round was Nate Gray who posted a second round 75 (+3) during his first SCIAC Championships. Gray used 15 pars today after shooting a 79 yesterday. He and Barret McGinnis, who had the fourth scoring round for CLU today at 79 (+7) share a 154 overall for a 15th place tie.

Matching the 75 that Gray produced was senior Mikey McGinn. His two-day total of 145 (+1) is tied for third going into his final league round tomorrow.

Carding an 80, two strokes better than his opening round, was Austin Martinez while Julius Lorentzen rounded out the squad with an 89 for the Violet and Gold today.  

Hird, Martinez, McGinn and McGinnis each recorded a pair of birdies on Monday.

Leading the way individually is Chad Shigezawa from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with two sub-70 rounds for a 137 (-7). The only other golfer under par is Alec Spencer from La Verne with a 140 (-4).

The team standings feature CMS (582), LV (584), Redlands (594), CLU (609), Chapman (629), Occidental (642), Whittier (644) and Pomona-Pitzer (655).

Cal Lutheran and the rest of the field will conclude the 2014 SCIAC Championships tomorrow, Tuesday, April 29, with a final 18-holes to determine a league champion. Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m.
