Regals Fall on Home Floor
CLU drops game to San Diego Christian
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Closing out a day that featured three games inside the Gilbert Arena, the Cal Lutheran women’s basketball team nearly completed a comeback against NAIA San Diego Christian, but ultimately fell 47-44 in the non-conference contest tonight.
A slow start on both sides saw a combined nine points over the first seven minutes of action before CLU opened a four-point, 15-8, gap at the 6:42 mark on a steal and fast break from Chelsea Jacoby. A SDC foul put the ball right back in the Regals hands and Jessica Solattolo converted a layup before Jacoby poured in another bucket, forcing a San Diego Christian timeout.
Just as CLU built a lead, the Hawks woke up forcing back-to-back Cal Lutheran turnovers and converted both into fast break layups as part of a 9-0 run. San Diego Christian closed out the half with a 12-2 stretch, cutting the CLU lead to one at 21-20 on a Hannah Miller three-pointer with 25 seconds to play before the mid-way point of the game.
After the break Alexa Davidson tied things at 21-21 with a free-throw. The squads were also even at 26-all at the 14:54 mark. Briana Martinez broke the tie with another free-throw and the Hawks would use that spark for a string of eight unanswered points before Taylor Messick got Cal Lutheran back in the scoring column. After chipping away, Sofia Cruz converted three consecutive free-throws to knot the teams once more.
In the final three minutes SDC used a jumper to break a 40-40 tie and followed with a three-pointer as the clock wound down to under a minute in regulation. A pair of free-throws secured a victory for the Hawks.
Leading all players tonight was Jacoby with 12 followed by Cruz and San Diego Christian’s Miller with 11 apiece. Nine of the 10 Regals who saw game action scored at least one point and all nine of those players also recorded a rebound. Jacoby again led all players, sharing the game-high with Davidson of SDC as each grabbed six. Cruz, Katy Lindor and Natalie Stone had five rebounds apiece. Keeley Anderson came up with a pair of blocks for CLU and her counterpart for the Hawks, Melissa Beatty, recorded a pair as well. Martinez led all players with five steals while Jacoby was one back with four. Stone handed out six assists, which were also tops in the game.
San Diego Christian (5-2) also got eight points from Gabriele Concepcion and seven from Martinez.
Cal Lutheran (2-5) returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 18 when the Regals travel to Hope International for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
