Swimming and Diving gets league action underway

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the first time this winter the Cal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team stepped up to the blocks and onto the boards in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. The Kingsmen were defeated 198-97 by Pomona-Pitzer at the Haldeman Aquatics Center.

Headlining the CLU performances today were freshman cross-over athlete Zach Loza,who turned in his water polo cap for a pair of goggles, winning the 200 Freestyle in a time of 1:48.60, and diver Ryan Brem who swept both the one-meter and three-meter events.

Brem was the only diver on both boards to surpass 200-points, scoring a 227.40 on the one-meter and a 246.98 on the three-meter. The sophomore duo of Joey Zielsdorf (172.05) and Kevin Schultz (151.80) were second and third on the one-meter board and Zielsdorf made it a 1-2 finish on the three-meter after scoring 170.77.

Loza went on to place second in the 100 free, clocking in at 49.19. Conrad Sheffer hit the wall in 49.63 after concluding his only season of water polo for the Kingsmen. Sheffer placed second in the 200 Breaststroke (2:19.20) and fourth in the 100 Butterfly (55.35) as well.

Also transitioning right from water polo season into the lanes were distance swimmers Mike Potter and Derrick Graham who each competed in the 1000 free and 500 free. Potter went a 10:40.17 in the 1000 and followed up with a fourth place 500 free swim of 5:06.13. Graham began his senior season with a 1000 time of 10:58.27. Bryce Woodell and Camron Hauer also each made the change for the first time as well, swimming the 200 free in 1:58.21 and 2:07.63, respectively.

Chase Miller opened his senior SCIAC season with a second place finish in the 100 Backstroke in 1:05.14. Miller then swam the 200 free in 1:57.73. Senior Tyler Berg was third in the 50 free, going a 22.51 in his final league opener.

Freshman Patrick Gregory began his SCIAC career with a second place finish in the 100 Breaststroke, hitting the wall in 1:02.46. Michael Fernandez placed second in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:05.29 and he was also the top CLU finisher in the 200 back (2:20.79).

Rounding out the meet for the Kingsmen was the 200 Free Relay team of Berg, Loza, Miller and Sheffer who placed second in 1:29.79. Taking third was another CLU team, comprised of Potter, Asante Sefa-Boakya, Mason Hill and Graham as the quartet combined for a time of 1:31.97.

Cal Lutheran (0-1) returns to the competition pool after the New Year when the Kingsmen and Regals host the Inaugural Chris Knorr Invitational on Jan. 3-4 at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Friday events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. with competition continuing on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
